Debt Advice Foundation

Debt Advice Foundation (DAF) was established in 2002 and is a registered charity in England and Wales (1095705). Its mission is to help the growing number of people who find themselves with unmanageable debts. It does this in a number of different ways including one-to-one advice and education initiatives.

At the heart of the charity’s philosophy is the prevention and cure of consumer debt problems in the UK. Whilst its primary focus is on helping those that are in need of advice and support today, it strongly believes that improving financial literacy amongst the next generation is the key to tackling the increasing levels of consumer debt in the UK.

The charity's objectives are:
• Provide free, impartial and appropriate advice to people with unaffordable debt.
• Help people with debt problems to gain free access to solutions that will help them.
• Promote the education of young people in money management so as to reduce the likelihood they will misuse debt later in their lives.
• Undertake or fund research to understand why problem debt happens and its effect on individuals, families and the wider UK economy.
• Use this evidence to become a force for beneficial change within the credit and debt solutions industry and to work with government to bring about legislative change to benefit UK consumers.

The Debt Advice Foundation is funded by the credit industry. If you wish to offer financial support to the charity see 'Ways You Can Help'.

Peaceworks

Peaceworks is a non-profit organisation committed to building peace and reconciliation. Our passion is to help people find their own solutions to conflicts they face, and to equip them with life skills to resist the negative impact of conflicts, especially children, young people, and those living in deprived areas or who would not normally have opportunities to develop these life skills. We work for peace and reconciliation though a variety of strategies, particularly mediation.
Mediation is a method of conflict resolution that helps those involved in a conflict to reach a win-win solution with the help of an impartial third party. The Peaceworks Peer Mediation in Schools Programme (PPMSP)is an anti bullying educational programme which positively impacts anti social behaviour.
Conflicts at home and at school can prove to be highly detrimental to children's enjoyment of life and their ability to achieve and learn at school. Through the PPMSP, Peaceworks works with children & young people, schools and colleges to reduce bullying and anti-social behaviour, and to develop positive communication and conflict resolution skills. Peer mediation is a powerful conflict resolution technique that trains pupils and enables them to volunteer to work as mediators with their peers. The scheme is based on a sustainable whole-school approach and is supported by school staff teams who also receive mediation skills training. Peer mediation engages and empowers students augmenting pupil voice strategies. Students use their conflict resolution skills beyond the school community, giving their families the opportunity to realise alternative strategies for conflict resolution. We have collected encouraging evidence that peer mediation skills can help break cycles of destructive behaviour in families in crisis.

The Cure Parkinson's Trust has one bold aim - to cure Parkinson's disease.

The charity funds innovative projects and inspirational scientists with the aim of building momentum towards a cure.

It brings scientists together to improve communication and promotes collaboration between researchers.

Founded by patients, the Trust is passionate about involving patients in this vision.

"If we all start hoping for a cure, believing in a cure and talking about a cure, then perceptions will change. Already there are pioneering new methods which are not so much treating Parkinson's as reversing it. We are convinced that although the road to a cure may be about money and science, the drive for a cure will be powered by public opinion. With your help we can effect this change."

The Society of St James is a successful Southampton and Hampshire based registered charity that was formed in 1972 to address poverty, sickness, hardship and distress with a focus on vulnerable and homeless people. Over the years St James has developed considerably into what it is now, a large and diverse organisation supporting many of Southampton’s and Hampshire’s vulnerable adults.
At the Society of St James we believe in peoples futures. We believe that every individual has a right to a home and we believe that individuals should be given the opportunity to develop skills that enable them to lead a fulfilling life.
Since 1972 St James’ main focus has been on the homeless and we now manage over 300 bed spaces within Southampton via a variety of projects that include an intensive support hostel, a life skills hostel, projects for people with mental health issues, heavy drinker’s projects, and move on flats. In addition to this St James’ diversity covers a number of tier two drug services, a substance misuse support services and a computer recycling and training project. The Society of St James also manages Avondale, our residential care home for elderly homeless people.

RNID is the largest charity that represents the needs of the 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK. As a membership charity, we aim to achieve a radically better quality of life for deaf people. We do this by campaigning and lobbying vigorously, by raising public awareness of deafness and hearing loss, by providing services and through medical and technical research.

In 2009, RNID has been chosen as The Co-operative charity of the year, and together we are launching Hearing Matters, a national campaign to ensure that in future everyone over 55 is invited to have their hearing screened on the NHS. In the meantime RNID wants to check the hearing of one million people - so take the hearing check today and encourage your friends, family and colleagues to check their hearing too http://www.rnid.org.uk/1in7

We are a 365 day-a-year life-saving service across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Norfolk and Suffolk. The charity is independent of government and National Lottery funding and is entirely dependent on fund-raising and contributions. To keep its two air ambulances flying and to provide the advanced medical equipment they carry over £3 million per year has to be raised.

On average the EAAA are called to four incidents a day, life threatening situations such as road traffic accidents, incidents involving people in inaccessible places, cardiac arrests. Because of the advanced skills, drugs and equipment found on board, and being able to access places impossible for a land ambulance, the EAAA can make the difference.

This charity, set up in 1993, aims to protect threatened natural habitats, the biodiversity they contain, as well as the indigenous people depending on them. Rainforest Concern operates in 12 countries worldwide: Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Romania, Suriname, Costa Rica, Panama, India, Sri Lanka and Uganda. The charity works to manage and create protected reserves within forested land, in particular forested corridors; to create alternative income, health and education programmes with local communities, such as sustainable small-scale horticulture. These also reduce negative human impact on forests. In addition, the charity encourages research in biodiversity and operates a volunteer program where gap year students have the opportunity to participate in conservation work. Rainforest Concern also fundraise within schools where students are learning about conservation, and the money raised goes towards their continued work in the forests. Their website contains information about the rainforests, including cloud forests, and the need for conservation. There are many ways to give to this charity, including the chance to visit the rainforests and learn about Rainforest Concern's work and the plight of the rainforests, the people and the wildlife within them.

It is well known that Giant Pandas are endangered. Why they are endangered is a result of hunting, farming and overall, a growth in human population accumulating in their habitats. Without the help of charities such as Pandas International, this loving species will be no more. Charities such as Pandas International work to prevent this day from every coming: they help to provide the care and protection that these animals need to prevent their population from falling further, and to secure their future. This includes medical resources to vets and GPS systems to help reintroduce Pandas back into the wild, amongst others. By researching and putting the facilities in place to save a single Panda, they are effectively saving a whole species.

Motivation

Motivation is an international disability and development charity that works to improve the quality of life of disabled people in developing countries. Without an appropriate wheelchair, disabled people in developing countries are excluded from most aspects of life; including education, healthcare and employment. When nothing else is available, many disabled people use imported second-hand wheelchairs, which are too big or simply unsuitable for their local terrain. These wheelchairs quickly break down in the harsher conditions of developing countries, and shockingly they can lead to serious secondary health complications (such as pressure ulcers) that can even be fatal.

Motivation works with local disability organisations to design and build low cost, high quality wheelchairs that are appropriate for the local terrain. Motivation provides the wheelchair user with the skills to get the most out of their wheelchair, as well as teaching personal healthcare and mobility skills and tips on how to best maintain the wheelchair. Being mobile is an important first step in accessing one’s right to education, employment and every day life. Motivation therefore runs vocational training and employment programmes, to ensure that the disabled person can generate an income and achieve a good quality of life.

We have supported court cases, launched massive media stories and carried out high-profile protests with great success. Our work has led to the demarcation of tribal reserves, the abandonment of oil exploration projects and a far greater global awareness of the issue. All this happens independently of governmental or corporate sponsorship, thanks to our supporters. We work towards a world where tribal peoples have their land rights respected, their human rights upheld and the opportunity to decide their futures."

This is a charity which campaigns for the protection of marine life, which includes clean seas and beaches - such things which cause tremendous harm to sealife by destroying natural habitats. They work to raise awareness and to campaign to the government to introduce policies such as a marine bill, which would place into action various schemes to help protect these animals. Their protection of the wildlife includes a campaign for coral reef, whilst they also address the global issues of climate change and pollution, which of course have a tremendous impact on marine life. Furthermore, they work to raise awareness through various events and projects, whilst their website also features an intuitive section on 'cool seas', which features colourful pages with relevant information to sealife and pictures to accompany them, including a section on threats which shows the true problems facing marine life - the problems that this charity helps to remedy. This part of the website is suitable for children and adults to view and learn from - children in particular will enjoy the games section.

UNICEF is the leading children’s organisation, reaching children in more than 150 less-developed countries around the world. UNICEF helps children receive the support, health care and education they need to survive the threats of childhood poverty. It encourages families to educate girls as well as boys. It strives to protect children from violence and abuse, and from exploitation through child labour or trafficking. It also protects children in the midst of war and natural disasters, such as those affected by the recent Myanmar Cyclone and the earthquake in China, and provides emergency assistance. UNICEF upholds the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and works to hold the international community responsible for their promises to children. UNICEF is not funded by the UN. Instead, it relies on voluntary donations to fund our work for children worldwide.

This is a charity which focuses on the poverty in Ethiopia, working for change. Ethiopia is a country injured by famine, war and a lack of education. Change will allow people to develop the knowledge to be able to become self-sufficient in their agricultural production, aiding them through drought. The charity also helps on various legal and moral issues, for example providing safety for children who are victims of abuse, and providing pensions to the elderly who have no other means of survival. Education is also provided, including a computer laboratory, something which provides education beyond a blackboard. Many of the diseases which we, in the western world, are immunised against, are threats to the people of Ethiopia. The charity has various projects and supports various hospitals in order to reduce the spread of these diseases and treat those who have them.
