This charity, set up in 1993, aims to protect threatened natural habitats, the biodiversity they contain, as well as the indigenous people depending on them. Rainforest Concern operates in 12 countries worldwide: Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Romania, Suriname, Costa Rica, Panama, India, Sri Lanka and Uganda. The charity works to manage and create protected reserves within forested land, in particular forested corridors; to create alternative income, health and education programmes with local communities, such as sustainable small-scale horticulture. These also reduce negative human impact on forests. In addition, the charity encourages research in biodiversity and operates a volunteer program where gap year students have the opportunity to participate in conservation work. Rainforest Concern also fundraise within schools where students are learning about conservation, and the money raised goes towards their continued work in the forests. Their website contains information about the rainforests, including cloud forests, and the need for conservation. There are many ways to give to this charity, including the chance to visit the rainforests and learn about Rainforest Concern's work and the plight of the rainforests, the people and the wildlife within them.
