Peaceworks is a non-profit organisation committed to building peace and reconciliation. Our passion is to help people find their own solutions to conflicts they face, and to equip them with life skills to resist the negative impact of conflicts, especially children, young people, and those living in deprived areas or who would not normally have opportunities to develop these life skills. We work for peace and reconciliation though a variety of strategies, particularly mediation.
Mediation is a method of conflict resolution that helps those involved in a conflict to reach a win-win solution with the help of an impartial third party. The Peaceworks Peer Mediation in Schools Programme (PPMSP)is an anti bullying educational programme which positively impacts anti social behaviour.
Conflicts at home and at school can prove to be highly detrimental to children's enjoyment of life and their ability to achieve and learn at school. Through the PPMSP, Peaceworks works with children & young people, schools and colleges to reduce bullying and anti-social behaviour, and to develop positive communication and conflict resolution skills. Peer mediation is a powerful conflict resolution technique that trains pupils and enables them to volunteer to work as mediators with their peers. The scheme is based on a sustainable whole-school approach and is supported by school staff teams who also receive mediation skills training. Peer mediation engages and empowers students augmenting pupil voice strategies. Students use their conflict resolution skills beyond the school community, giving their families the opportunity to realise alternative strategies for conflict resolution. We have collected encouraging evidence that peer mediation skills can help break cycles of destructive behaviour in families in crisis.
